The soundtrack album marks first collaboration of Karan Johar and Pritam, although the latter composed for several films produced by  Dharma Productions . It is based on film's theme on unrequited love, consisting situational numbers portraying emotions of characters. Irrefutably, all songs in the movie are beautiful when produced in its raw form. Please note that George Michael ( one of my Favourites) sang backing vocals on this track. Though the song appears to be about a woman, Nikita in Eastern Europe can also be a man's name. At the time Elton John was married to German engineer Renate Blauel. Their marriage lasted four years, although Elton John later admitted he realized he was homosexual before his marriage. The name means unconquered or unconquerable. Elton John himself admitted in an interview that he knew Nikita was a masculine name. The beauty of the lyrics, however, is perhaps best appreciated once you can get over the whole slave-master dynamic that is going on as Mala Sinha sings to Dharmendra ( who was only 27 years old then)  in the film. Personally it’s a special song as this was my first song played on our newly bought tape recorder in 1985. Lyrically, it tells the story of a man who is cheating on his wife with a mistress, only to find out in the end that his wife is cheating on him as well. Net net it’s a song of extra marital affairs or for that matter single persons cheating on their partners.
