  Song: Nikita Singer : Elton John Year : 1985 In this Cold War ballad, a Westerner falls in love with an East German citizen he cannot meet because he is not allowed to cross the Berlin Wall. This was a very revolutionary song during the Cold War; Eastern Europeans who lived in the communist block would listen to Western radio stations like Free Europe and pick up on the sentiments. Please note that George Michael ( one of my Favourites) sang backing vocals on this track. Though the song appears to be about a woman, Nikita in Eastern Europe can also be a man's name. At the time Elton John was married to German engineer Renate Blauel. Their marriage lasted four years, although Elton John later admitted he realized he was homosexual before his marriage. The name means unconquered or unconquerable. Elton John himself admitted in an interview that he knew Nikita was a masculine name. This heightens the probability that there was a homosexual undertone to the song.  ...

Song : Aap ki Nazaron ne samjha Film: Anpad Year : 1962 Writer: Raja Mehndi Ali Khan Music: Madan Mohan Singer : Lata Im going to share the lyrics and song of a ghazal from Anpadh (1962) that is widely considered to be one of this duo’s ( Raja and Madan Mohan) finest: “Aap kii nazaron ne samjhaa.” Penned by Raja Mehndi Ali Khan, the lyrics of this song are an equal match for the beauty of the musical composition and rendering. The beauty of the lyrics, however, is perhaps best appreciated once you can get over the whole slave-master dynamic that is going on as Mala Sinha sings to Dharmendra ( who was only 27 years old then)  in the film. Although I admit that it is bizarre to refer to your lover as “banda-parvar” (master, lord), it is important to remember that these lyrics were written for the society of 1960s India: gender norms from that era differ dramatically from those established in modern times. It is a  power ballad duet featuring Starship vocalists  Grace Slick  and  Mickey Thomas . It is the theme to the romantic comedy film “ Mannequin ”. Another popular song of the group is “ We built this city on Rock and Roll” In a radio interview, Hammond said that the idea for the song came from his impending marriage to his live-in girlfriend of seven years, after his divorce from his previous wife was finalized. Song: Part time Lover ( 1985) Singer: Stevie Wonder Part-Time Lover" is a single by American  R&B  singer and songwriter  Stevie Wonder , from his 1985 album  In Square Circle . Personally it’s a special song as this was my first song played on our newly bought tape recorder in 1985. Lyrically, it tells the story of a man who is cheating on his wife with a mistress, only to find out in the end that his wife is cheating on him as well. Net net it’s a song of extra marital affairs or for that matter single persons cheating on their partners. Decades later our very own Mr Chetan Bhagat may have got inspired by this song ( my personal view) and wrote Half girlfriend (Just a another name for part time lover). It's a reference to   impending death of the prey . Here it refers to the focus on ones lifes dreams. There are several instances in life where we can, and should forgive and forget, but we choose to tow along. To such meagre beings, Bakshi sahab offers a piece of precious advice-  ‘Zindagi ke safar me guzar jaate hain jo makaam, woh phir nahin aate…’ If you look closer at the words penned by Anand Bakshi, the song is eerily like Rajesh Khanna life story finally understanding the wrongs he committed.
