Nikita - Elton John 1985
Song: Nikita
Singer
: Elton John
Year :
1985
In
this Cold War ballad, a Westerner falls in love with an East German citizen he
cannot meet because he is not allowed to cross the Berlin Wall. This was a very
revolutionary song during the Cold War; Eastern Europeans who lived in the
communist block would listen to Western radio stations like Free Europe and
pick up on the sentiments.
Please
note that George Michael ( one of my Favourites) sang backing vocals on this
track.
Though
the song appears to be about a woman, Nikita in Eastern Europe can also be a
man's name. At the time Elton John was married to German engineer Renate
Blauel. Their marriage lasted four years, although Elton John later admitted he
realized he was homosexual before his marriage.
The name means unconquered or unconquerable.
Elton John himself admitted in an interview that he knew Nikita was a masculine
name. This heightens the probability that there was a homosexual undertone to
the song.
Contrary to popular belief,
the name Nikita isn’t actually a female name. In Russia and some other places
in Eastern Europe, it is given to males. According to Elton (who came out as
gay years after the release of the song), he was aware that Nikita is a male
name when he wrote the song.
The Ken Russell-directed video has Elton John
regularly crossing the border post into Communist Europe. One of the guards is
Nikita, and gradually the two fall in love.
The woman who played the role of Nikita (Elton
John’s love interest) in the music video is English actress, model and former
athlete Anya Major.
John
has been with his gay partner David for last 25 years..still going strong.
One
small suggestion: If your partner name ends with “TA” like Savita or Vinita or
Sarita for example. Try singing this song for them and replace the word Nikita
with their name and see the delight on their face…
Enjoy this
beauty and have a super day people
