Musafir hoon yaaron
Song : Musafir hoon yaaron
Year : 1972
Film: Parichay
Music: RD Burman
Singer : Kishore Kumar
Lyricist : Gulzar
The song Musafir hoon yaaron is from the movie Parichay which starred Jeetendra and Jaya bhaduri and was directed by Gulzar himself.
In 1972, RD composed another evergreen gem “Musafir hoon yaaron” for the film “Parichay” when he drove on the streets of Bombay well past midnight along with Gulzar only to come up with this gem. Musafir Hoon Yaaron is a historical song simply because it brought R.D. Burman and Gulzar to work together for the first time. The friendship that followed is among the most legendary in Bollywood.
“Once Gulzar and RD met at Rajkamal Studio in Parel, where RD was so busy he had no time even to speak. Gulzar took out a piece of paper out of his pocket and said, ‘Here is the mukhra of a song. Let me listen after the tune is set.’ The mukda “ Musafir hoon yaaron na ghar hai na tikana, muje chalte jaana hai….bas..chalte jaana”
Now look at the madness of RD - , “it was midnight when he drove all the way to Gulzar’s place, woke him up around 1 AM and took him out in his car around the city, playing the tune of ‘Musafir hoon yaaron’ all along. He had recorded the tune ( mukda and Antra both) on a cassette already. The dashboard of the car was used as tabla, as usual. Gulzar’s sleep vanished because he got the tune he wanted. He wrote the antra lines in the moving vehicle. He was happy.”
Burman always complained how difficult it was to give music to Gulzar Saab’s lyrics. “Next you will bring me the newspaper headline and tell me to tune it,” RD scoffed when he was given the lyrics of “ Mera kuch samaan tumhare pass pada hai” which he had written on his own broken marriage.
Not this one. Not this time. Musafir a song about the journey of life makes complete sense even today.
Best lines :
“Ek Raah mud gayi tho aur judd gayi
Mein mudda tho saath saath rah mudd gayi
Hawa ke paron par mera aashiyana”
The above lines basically means that if one door ( road) in ones life closes then a another door ( road) will open….the trick is keep moving / travelling…
In the second antra Gulzar plays around with nature to give a beautiful meaning to life-
“Din ne haath tham kar idhar bitta liya
Raat ne isshare se udder bula liya” - Mind blowing lyrics.
This was one of the initial songs which were followed by a long association between the two. “A long drive at midnight was Pancham’s passion. Gulzar had to accompany him on many such occasions,”.
RD was Gulzar’s closest buddy along with Sanjeev Kumar till their death. Even today Gulzar says that he would have worked only with RD if he was alive. And his living room is full of pics of RD and Sanjeev Kumar.
RD and Gulzar were like magic when they collaborated.
Incredible men with indelible mark in the musical universe.
